Limited Representation

For a Film and Media Studies class, where we were tasked on creating something that tackled a subject we addressed in class. I decided to make an illustration regarding minority representation in film – specifically, I wanted to emphasize that representation is not an objective good.
If too little exists, those scraps will shape people’s views of you and the group you belong to. That character will be intertwined with you, whether it’s flattering or not. Meanwhile, the average common white character is seen as the default, not the deviation, and as such will likely not be perceived as representative of their racial group.

Custom profile pictures based on headshots, using a limited, 4-color palette and strong emphasis on abstraction. Stylistically, it was important to keep both the uniqueness of the person’s facial/hair/head structure to maintain recognizability while simplifying it.

Zine Illustrations
Pieces made for fan zines, which are fan-made art booklets of popular characters. Participation entailed being accepted for meeting skill level and communicating with team to produce piece in established time limit.
